He has recently taken over and is settling down. Surrounded by staff of the Akademi, issuing instructions, Uttam Pacharne finds time for a tet-a-tet with Aamchidilli.

Visit any Arts College and you will find a good percentage of women studying Art. But compare their numbers and men outnumber women in the field of Art.

Why?

Not many pursue their passion once they get into household responsibilities. The Akademi will soon announce a programme to promote women artists in the country, Pacharne told Aamchidilli.
He tells the story of a girl in Ahmednagar, a talented artist who was not allowed by her family to exhibit her paintings. He persuaded her family elders and her husband..and helped her hold an exhibition in Mumbai where her paintings won rave reviews, Pacharne said. There is huge pool of talent in women that remains untapped, indoors.

His endeavour will be to give platform to this untapped pool of talent.
Pacharne's own story tells of his passion for art. Three and a half decades ago, he left Ahmednagar, his home town, for Pune armed with his paint box with an ambition to become an arts teacher. There was no looking back for the young man as he  went to JJ School of Arts,  Mumbai where he went to learn painting but got attracted to sculpting too..
Statues of Mahatma Gandhi,  Chhatrapati Shivaji, Shahu Maharaj, Swatantryaveer Savarkar sculpted by Pacharne can be found in various parts of India.
Established in 1954, the Lalit Kala Akademi was a dream of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru for a cultural and national identity.
Inaugurating the Akademi, the then Minister for Education, Moulana Abul Kalam Azad had said the Akademi must work to preserve the glorious traditions of the past and enrich them by the work of our modern artists...it must also seek to improve standards and refine public taste. He is aware of the responsibility as head of this premier Institute of the country, Pacharne said.
Renoqned world over as an artist and a sculptor Uttam Pacharne will hold charge for three years. A recipient of National Lalit Kala Award, Pacharne currently is also Member, Advisory Committee of Kala Akademi, Goa.

Search Wikipedia for prominent Indian painters and you get a list of seven: Amrita Sher-Gil (1913–1941), painter. Anamika. V, contemporary artist.,Anjolie Ela Menon (b. 1940), painter and muralist, Arpita Singh (1937), painter, Bharti Kher (b. 1969), painter, sculptor and installation artist, B. Prabha (1933–2001), painter, Maya Burman, Dayanita Singh.

One can hope the list grows into several soon.
